Cyclosporiasis: What to Know
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Symptoms appear about 1 to 14 days after consuming contaminated food or water.
Symptoms include:
- watery diarrhea
- frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements
- extreme fatigue
- loss of appetite
- substantial weight loss
- increased gas and bloating
- stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting
- low-grade fever
Reduce your risk of foodborne illness. Wash fruits and vegetables before eating. Avoid drinking untreated water from lakes, streams, springs or other untreated sources. Wash hands after using the toilet and changing diapers, and before handling food or eating.
