Severna Park (June 2, 2026) - The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has issued an emergency closure for Cypress Creek in Severna Park to the headwaters of the Magothy River due to a large sewage spill. This comes from a large sanitary sewer overflow yesterday in the 800 block of Ritchie Highway.
Officials with the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works report that the majority of the 16,200 gallons of the overall overflow was contained on land, and a small portion entered Cypress Creek before the spill was contained.
The affected waters are closed for direct water contact. The emergency closing will remain in effect for one week following a spill, unless the sewage spill is determined to adversely impact a designated bathing beach. In these cases, the emergency closing will remain in effect until water quality results are acceptable. Signage has been posted to alert the community.
