The selected candidate will function as a non-clinical, peer-based professional who engages, educates and supports individuals to make the life changes necessary to recover from a disabling mental illness and/or substance use disorder. The job duties are educational and coaching in nature. A key element that enhances and distinguishes this position is that the candidate appropriately highlights their personal experience of recovery.

The selected candidate will provide post-overdose intervention outreach to overdose survivors in the community. The candidate will work as a member of a two-person team with the primary goal of keeping people safe, however that is defined by the individual. This position requires travel to locations throughout Anne Arundel County.

Experience:

• Must provide a personal statement describing the skills and abilities he/she has to offer
• Must have minimum of two years of recovery from an addiction or co-occurring disorder. One year is acceptable with a letter from a treatment professional that has personal knowledge of the individual’s recovery.
• Must complete peer specialist core training, peer counselor or a comparable training program from a recognized and approved source within 18 months of entry into the position.
• Ability to maintain effective peer recovery relationships with clients
• No current criminal justice system involvement. The bureau will consider the length of time since the last conviction and the type of crime.
• Must have a vehicle available for travel.
• Must have a current Maryland driver’s license with a clear driving record.

The selected candidate must have very strong time management and organizational skills; the ability to work independently and on a team; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational skills; and an understanding of Anne Arundel County resources. The candidate must also be proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel and electronic medical records.
