Job Description
Nature of Work:
Reports to the Director of Communications and responsible for supporting the Office of Communication’s tasks of coordinating and overseeing internal and external communications, managing Department social media accounts, and implementing an outreach and communication strategy to engage community partners and stakeholders. The Health Communications and Outreach Strategist will lead the full lifecycle of planning and execute communication and support for outreach activities with staff, community organizations, partners and community members. In collaboration with the Director of Communications, they are able to implement an outreach and communication strategy to connect with diverse populations and stakeholders. Should have training in effective social media strategies, preparing press releases and serve as the conduit between community-based organizations and the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. Have a demonstrated record of success as an online communicator, including a proven track record of establishing external communications plans, engaging and growing supporter lists, working collaboratively across departments and using social media to enhance reach. |
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree. |
Experience:
Must have at least two to five years of experience working in news media, outreach, government communications and/or public relations settings. |
Notes:
Requires interpersonal and communication skills to efficiently work with diverse groups of community members and coordinate team members. Requires excellent organizational skills, flexibility and the ability to get things done. Consults and collaborates internally with Department of Health staff for ideas, content and strategic planning, then works externally to make those plans happen. Responds to invitation requests, creates the plan to be involved at events and works with staff to represent the Department of Health. This also includes finding events and audiences we have not reached before. Serves as the conduit between community-based organizations and the Department of Health. Assists in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content and collaborates in the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan for the department. |
Desired or Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in communications. Substantial social media experience. Knowledge of public health messaging and advancing health equity and health literacy. Fluent in Spanish. Familiar with AP Stylebook writing and editing. |
