Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFM) usually affects young children, but it may be seen in adults. Most cases occur in the summer and early fall. The disease is characterized by tiny blisters on the inside of the mouth and the palms of the hands, fingers and soles of the feet. HFM is caused by one of several types of viruses and is spread through person-to-person contact. For information on the symptoms, prevention and control of the disease, see:
