Employee Influenza Vaccination Policy

In 2006, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health implemented a policy requiring all Department employees to obtain an annual influenza vaccine or sign a declination of the vaccine. The policy’s purpose is to encourage employees to be vaccinated against the flu and subsequently minimize transmission of the influenza virus in the workplace and in the community. Under the policy, the vaccine is administered free of charge at various times and locations to employees and a record is kept of employees accepting or declining vaccination.

The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend vaccination of all workers in the health care setting. Health care professionals are encouraged to implement an employee influenza vaccine policy in their workplace. The Department of Health’s policy may be used as an example for health care facilities wishing to implement a similar policy.
