Salary: $19.32 per hour for possession of required bachelor’s degree, $21.53 per hour for possession of master’s degree in public health or community health education

Benefits: Participation in the county’s group health insurance program (including dental and optical), paid sick leave, paid annual leave and paid holidays. The selected applicant may also participate in the county’s deferred compensation plan at his or her own expense.

Job Description

Nature of Work: This experienced professional staff person is a team member in the Community Education and Health Equity Program with responsibility for health education projects. Responsibilities include planning, developing, implementing, promoting and evaluating comprehensive health education projects designed to further public awareness and understanding of the factors influencing health status and community health activities and services. Specific emphasis of this position will be on heart disease and cancer prevention education for youth and adults, with professional familiarity in working with minority populations, particularly the African American community. Duties include public speaking and use of computer software such as Microsoft Office. This position requires travel through the county. Employee must use own vehicle and will be eligible for mileage reimbursement. Occasional evening and weekend hours for health education presentations, health fairs and other activities will be required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public health education, community health education or health science. There are no substitutions for the specific degree requirement.

Experience: One year experience planning, developing, implementing and promoting health education projects.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications:

Additional consideration will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Possession of master’s degree in public health or community health education.
  • Professional experience working with minority populations, particularly African American communities.
  • Fluency in Spanish verbal and written skills.
  • Professional experience in planning and implementing evidence-based programs and activities in heart disease and cancer prevention.
  • Professional experience evaluating evidenced based public health strategies.
  • Professional experience identifying, coordinating and implementing needed public health policy, systems and environmental change.
  • Professional experience in public speaking.
  • Professional experience with grant writing.
  • Professional experience using computer software such as Microsoft Office 2010 and Adobe to create health education materials.
  • Professional experience utilizing social media as marketing tools.
