Household Refuse: Clean, Sanitary and Safe Storage
Updated: 3.8.12
Improperly stored household trash and garbage can provide food and a home for rodents and insects and create unsightly conditions. It is important that residents take certain steps to prevent a nuisance from becoming a neighborhood problem. Good sanitation is necessary for a healthy community.
Do's and Don'ts of proper trash storage:
- Do store household refuse in rodent-proof, insect-proof and watertight trash cans with tight fitting lids.
- Don't use plastic bags for outside storage.
- Do put proper trash cans at curbside by 6:00 a.m. the morning of scheduled public collection days.
- Don't store large items such as furniture, mattresses or appliances in the yard.
- Do recycle glass, cardboard, plastic or mixed paper. All items should be cleaned before storage in the yellow recycling bin.
- Do call the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works' Waste Management Services for answers to specific questions on recycling or to schedule bulk items pickup at 410-222-6100.
- Do keep your yard litter-free.
The Anne Arundel County Department of Health responds to complaints from the public. Complaints can be made by calling the Department of Health, Housing and Food Protection Services, at 410-222-7363.
