Disposal of Sharps (Syringes, etc.) Used in the Home
- Last Updated: 11.21.13
Many individuals need to dispose of sharps (syringes, razor blades, lancets, etc.) that were used at home. This would include items such as syringes used for self administration of insulin and similar medications.
To safely dispose of such sharps, the Department of Health recommends placing them into a widemouthed metal or heavy plastic container with a secure lid such as a coffee can. Bleach should be poured into the container which can then be sealed with a lid and discarded with household trash.
