Department of Health Lifts Advisory for Headwaters of Mill Creek (Arnold)

Test Results Show Water Quality Acceptable for Swimming and Other Recreational Use

September 14, 2006 - The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has received the test results of water samples collected on September 11 and 12 from the headwaters area of Mill Creek in Arnold. Results show that the water in Mill Creek is acceptable for recreational water use, according to standards set by the Maryland Department of the Environment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Department of Health’s September 1 advisory, which extended from the headwaters to Haskell Drive on Mill Creek, has been lifted.

The Department of Health is responsible for issuing health advisories or closing recreational water areas when a sewage spill, leak, high bacterial count or other problem indicates that a human health risk exists. The water samples are tested for enterococci, bacteria that come from the intestine of all warm-blooded animals. Lab results from collected water samples take two or more working days to process. Advisories remain in effect until results meet acceptable levels for two or more consecutive days.

WATER SAMPLE RESULTS (See Map of Water Sampling Locations)

The Department of Health conducted weekly water sampling on Mill Creek during the peak swim season (Memorial Day - Labor Day).

The acceptable level for recreational water use of Mill Creek waterway during peak season is 275 MPN (most probable number) of bacteria colonies present in 100 milliliters of water. The acceptable level during other times is 500 MPN.

Factors that can affect the reduction of bacteria colonies include water temperature, precipitation and tidal action.
