Department of Health Offers Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Grants to Community Organizations

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Education Services Program recently sought community organizations to apply for Fiscal Year 2011 grants to implement the Strengthening Families and Second Step model programs, which are approved by the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. Strengthening Families is a weekly three-hour, 14-session program for parents and their children ages 6 to 11. Strengthening Families focuses on protecting families from factors that lead to substance abuse by helping to improve family relationships, parenting skills, and children's social and life skills. See Strengthening Families Brochure.

Second Step is a weekly one-hour program for middle school youth that lasts three months. The program encourages youth to resist impulsive decision-making, to handle emotions and to solve problems nonviolently. Grant awards range from $1,500 to $15,000. Staff training and the purchase of a curriculum will be included in the expenses for the grant award.

The deadline for grant applications was Friday, June 4, 2010. A Pre-Application Workshop was held on Friday, May 7.
