The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend seasonal flu vaccinations for anyone who wants to reduce the risk of becoming ill with seasonal flu or transmitting it to others. The CDC has also identified these priority groups for getting seasonal flu vaccine: children from 6 months to 5 years old; people 65 years of age and older; individuals with chronic medical conditions such as heart, kidney, liver or lung disease, diabetes, cancer or HIV/AIDS; pregnant women; residents of long-term care facilities; health care personnel; and household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 5 years old and of adults age 65 and older.

Each year, in the United States, on average 23,600 people die from seasonal flu-related complications and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu-related causes.
